Coastal
Geospatial Laboratory
The Coastal Geospatial Laboratory is part of the Department
of Earth and Environmental Science (EES) and the Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences (PIES). The
laboratory serves as a focal
point for basic and applied research on the
physical, geological, ecological, and biological properties of the oceans and
the coastal zone habitats using remote sensing and Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) technologies . The laboratory specializes in interdisciplinary research with emphasis on coastal processes and marine resources.
In addition to the satellite and airborne remotely sensed images, boat platform
equipped with multispectral, and hyperspectral sensors are used for gathering in situ data. Advanced computer systems
are employed to process, analyze and enhance the remotely sensed imagery.
The laboratory is housed in the Geology Building of the UNO
campus. It currently has two units:
- Spectroscopy Laboratory (Spec Lab)
- Image Processing & GIS Laboratory (RS/GIS Lab)
