SUMMER MINORITY PROGRAM IN GEOLOGY Geology of Utah
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UNO is offering 10 Minority High School students an opportunity to participate in an approximately 2-week field-laboratory geology program. The program will include 2 lecture-laboratory sessions at UNO plus a 13 day field trip to the STATE AND NATIONAL PARKS OF UTAH. A detailed itinerary will be provided in the spring. Students will be introduced to some basic principles of scientific exploration and thought as well as to some basic geologic concepts while traveling through one of the most spectacular regions of North America. Their exploration will include a mixture of walks, hikes drives, and outdoor discussion all conducted in Nature's grand classroom in Utah. Students say they never forget the things they learn about geoscience, the world around them, and themselves on this trip. There will also be some time for fun. Students camp out during the trip but are never to far from comforts such as showers. ELIGIBILITY 1. Open to Minority Students - Native Americans, African Americans, Spanish Speaking Americans, or other underrepresented groups. 2. You must have completed 10th grade. Graduating seniors are also eligible. 3. You must be recommended by your high school counselor, science teacher, or principal. 4. After an initial review of the applications, some students will be selected for follow-up interviews at UNO prior to selecting the final participants for the trip. CLASSES The dates of program are June13 - 25, 2010. Lab and lecture days at UNO are June 4, and June 11. COST Participants will not have to pay any fees for the field trip or laboratory portion of the trip. All participants will have their lodging, camping fees and meals paid by the program.
